Recreate an Oriental Design Theme with Sliding Doors

Posted on 07/12/2016

A distinctive feature of Japanese interior design is the Shoji - a sectional bamboo frame with this paper stretched over it. The shoji can be used as a window, a room divider or a door. You can incorporate elements of this oriental design theme into your bespoke wardrobe when you choose from our range of sliding door wardrobes.

Panel Options

In our Victoria range of fitted sliding door wardrobes, you can choose the material for each panel of the door. We don’t offer paper as an option, but you can always recreate the Shoji look with sturdier coloured glass, patterned glass and wood panel options.

Diffuse Light

One benefit of the translucent paper of the Shoji was the way it would diffuse light around a room. You can recreate this effect by choosing pale woods such as Swiss Pear and White Ash for your doors. Light is reflected by paler colours and absorbed by darker colours.

Oriental Patterns

Historically, the patterns drawn on silk and paper Shoji were inspired by nature. Local flora and fauna were popular motifs. Some of our patterned glass panels draw on a similar inspiration, whilst others have a more geometric Art Deco feel.
