More and more people are choosing to improve their home rather than move out, and loft conversions are one of the most popular ways to do that. Gaining an extra room or two is great, but storage can be a problem. With those sloping ceilings, it’s difficult to fit most traditional storage units into a loft conversion. Built-in storage really is the only way to go.
Use the Eaves for Storage
The eaves could easily become a dead space, but don’t forget about them. Built-in cupboards are a neat solution, making full use of the space. Paint them the same colour as the walls so they blend in seamlessly, or choose a bright colour to accent the room.
Build Angled Fitted Wardrobes
Fitted wardrobes make the most of every inch of your space, and because they’re built bespoke, you can put them in even the most awkward spaces. The gable end is often the best space to find hanging room, but you could also have a fitted wardrobe built on the wall of your entrance door. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could fit sliding wardrobe doors all the way across to create a hidden entrance – great fun if you’re using your loft conversion as a kids’ bedroom.
Add in a Partition Wall
One clever way of saving space in your loft conversion is to have a partition wall built on one side – or both, if your loft conversion is very big. This ‘squares off’ the main room, making it easier to furnish. The space between the eaves and the partition wall is the perfect place for fitted wardrobes. They can sit flush to the wall, maximising hanging space, and run the almost full length of the roof. It’s a smart way to fit a walk-in wardrobe into a small space.
