Now that voice-controlled assistants are becoming the norm and everything from your lightbulbs to your kettle can be controlled by your phone, it can sometimes feel like we’re living far beyond what we predicted life would be like by this point. Indeed, looking back at visions of the future like the classic cartoon The Jetsons can seem charmingly twee.

Over the past few years, we’ve been told time and again that using devices like phones, tablets and computers before bed affects our sleep negatively. Now that we can control the damaging blue light easily and there are more and more connected devices available, filling a bedroom with gadgets is no longer such a no-no. Getting a good night’s sleep is crucial to our overall health and makes us happier and more productive.

Smart Bed, Smart Sleep

Many of us use smart and wearable tech to monitor our health whilst at the gym and on the move. Companies are keen push the concept further and monitor sleep too. There are already apps and wearable devices that claim to track your sleeping patterns – some even wake you with gentle vibrations in your lightest period of sleep – but entire beds that monitor us is a quantum leap into the future. Smart beds range from sensors placed under the mattress to entire bed frames which monitor respiration, heart rate and movement and provide information and biometric readings via an app or cloud-based site.

Sensory Control

Light and sound hugely affect our sleep and the amount of REM sleep we have. Blackout blinds and curtains, and natural light alarm clocks are often promoted to better sleep. Gadgets that automatically open or close curtains based on the settings of your alarm clock, the sunrise/sunset and whether or not someone is home are now on the market to make getting out of bed even easier.

Sound machines that emit white noise, nature sounds or calming music are advertised as helping you not only get to sleep, but stay asleep too. Playing calming music as you drift off and gently transitioning to white noise, they block out distracting sounds such as traffic outside or neighbours watching television.

Designing your bedroom to be a haven of calmness and tranquillity, we can also help you plan for smart tech and devices that will give you a better night’s sleep. Get in touch for a free quote or visit one of our showrooms in Norwich and Cambridge.
