The New Year is in full swing, and, let's admit it: many of us have forgotten our New Year's Resolutions. But don't worry; there's still plenty of chances to improve your life in 2016. Decluttering is a simple one, and it's something we can all do. We've all got clothes we don't like anymore, or that simply aren't in fashion. Take a look at our tips on how to declutter your wardrobe this New Year and see if you can't get a bit of spring cleaning done early!
How to Declutter
If you find it hard to give anything away, then there is one simple technique that can give you great results. Take everything in your wardrobe, and put it into bin bags - who knows, you might find something lurking at the back that you haven't seen for years! Then take it all out, one by one. That way you'll be able to see what you need and what you don't.
What to Chuck
It's easy to hold onto clothes that you don't really need. When you're going through your wardrobe, ask yourself these questions for each item:
- Have I ever worn this?
- Has it been over a year since I've worn this?
- Is this uncomfortable or ill-fitting?
If the answer to any of these questions is 'yes', then it looks like it's time to say goodbye.
Where to Put Your Clutter
Don't just throw your clutter away. In Britain, we throw 500,000 tonnes of clothes away every year, and there's no need for this waste. Depending on the quality of what you want to chuck, you can:
- Sell it online
- Donate it to a charity shop
- Hold a clothes swap party with your friends or colleagues
- Recycle it at a clothing or shoe bank (these are often at supermarkets)
Although buying clothes can feel great, giving them away can too. Whether you're getting a little bit of money, giving your friend an item they really like, or giving something to charity, your old clothes will find a new owner and a new lease of life - not at the bottom of your wardrobe!
