Rules for Staying Productive Whilst Working from Home

Posted on 09/11/2016

In this increasingly interconnected world, it is easier than ever to work from home. The benefits are obvious: not having to commute or get dressed up saves time in your day, but how do you avoid procrastination - the curse of the homeworker? Follow our simple rules to stay productive whilst working at home.

  1. Set yourself office hours. Work is still work even if you are at home. Define your working day, coffee breaks and lunchtime and stick to it.
  2. Have a dedicated workspace. Tempting as it may be to lie in bed with your laptop balanced on top of you, this is not a productive position to work in and could be bad for your posture. Ideally, set yourself up a home office - we can help with that.
  3. Get Dressed. No need to put on a tie, but at least change out of your pyjamas: you are at work after all!
  4. Don’t get distracted by household chores. Get your work done first, you can put a load of laundry on in your lunch break and hang it up after work. Having a dedicated workspace where you aren’t constantly noticing the washing up will help with this.
  5. Turn off the internet. If you don’t need to be connected for the particular project that you are working on, turn off the internet for a bit. You are less likely to be distracted by the latest emails and better focussed on the job in hand.
  6. Take breaks. Remember the breaks you allocated yourself in rule one? Make sure you take them! You will actually be less productive if you chain yourself to your desk.
  7. Eat Healthily. This may actually be easier at home than in the office. You can prepare yourself simple healthy meals and won’t be snacking on hastily grabbed supermarket sandwiches and birthday pastries.
